The Version 2 PAL
Premium Installation Harness

(updated 3/24/12)

The standard installation harness works fine for installing the Version 2 PAL.  Hundreds are installed, and I rarely have problems with the standard harness.

But for the owner who wants the very best OEM (or better) quality of components, I offer a brand new Premium installation harness with the finest automotive components available.

The main differences between the standard harness and the Premium harness are the connectors and terminals used.  The standard harness uses generic connectors with terminals that cannot be removed once they are inserted into the connector.  The mechanism for latching the terminals in place is also better in the premium Delphi connectors - they can be removed but only with a special tool.  And the fit of the connectors into the OEM body harness, the XM receiver, and the PAL module is better with the Premium connectors.

The Premium harness is also fully wrapped for extra protection and strength like the rest of the OEM harnesses in your car.  To be fair, I've just started including standard harnesses that are also wrapped, so there's no difference in quality there.

I have previously been offering a Premium harness for the PAL installation, but the female connector (that connects to the OEM body harness connector) was not available from any source.  Delphi does not make a connector that mates with the Delphi or Yazaki 16 pin XM receiver connector.  For this new harness I use a very high quality Molex header with molded in terminals and the wires are individually soldered onto the backs of the terminals.  This is a relatively expensive and slow process, but the connection quality is even better than the crimped on terminals found in most OEM harnesses.

This new Premium harness is also considerably shorter than the old Premium harness, which allows it to fit better near the XM receiver in coupes, Z06s, and even convertibles.

It is custom designed for a PAL installation near the XM receiver.

Here's the new Premium harness for a PAL installation:

The connector in the upper right is the new Molex header that connects to the Delphi or Yazaki XM receiver connector on your OEM body harness.

The connector in the upper left is a Delphi Micro 64 connector identical to the OEM body harness connector in early C6 Corvettes and other current GM vehicles.  Later C6s changed to a compatible Yazaki connector for the XM receiver, and the Yazaki connectors are also high quality.  But in working with both the Yazaki and the Delphi connectors, in my opinion, the Delphi is the finest Micro 64 connector available.  Either connector will plug into the Molex header perfectly.  This Delphi connector shown in the upper left plugs into the XM receiver.

The connector at the bottom is the same Delphi Micro 64 connector that plugs into the PAL module.

Here is a closeup of the Molex header that connects to the OEM body harness:

With the heat shrink covering removed, you can see the quality of construction of the soldered wire connections:

Here's what the front of the Molex header looks like:

Because the terminals are molded in the connector core, they are perfectly straight.

So they will connect easily and securely with the OEM body harness connector.

Here's the back of the covered Molex header:

The connector is strong and well insulated.

Here is the front of the new Delphi XM receiver connector:

This Delphi 15394150 Micro 64 connector is the finest connector available.

With the correct Delphi tool, the terminals are removable, but without the tool they are latched in place permanently.

They will not come out and they make perfect contact with the Delphi XM receiver header on the receiver circuit board.

Here is the wiring into the back of the Delphi XM connector:

Note the blue lock on the connector.  With this pushed in, the black connector latch cannot be pushed down.

The connector latch securely holds the connector into the XM receiver header.

To remove the connector from the XM receiver, you must pull back the blue lock, then press down on the latch.

Here is same Delphi Micro 64 connector for the PAL module:

The PAL connector is wired differently than the connector for the XM receiver, so they cannot be interchanged.

Here is the wiring for the PAL connector:

It too fits perfectly into the Delphi header on the PAL module circuit board.

You must pull back the blue lock to be able to unlatch the connector.

I'm often asked which one to buy.  Is the premium harness worth the extra cost?

Let me put it this way.  The standard harness is a good quality harness that you will likely never have a problem with.  In the "land of GM", I'll call it "Buick or Pontiac" quality.  I've owned lots of GM cars, and Buicks and Pontiacs were good cars.  The Premium harness is "Cadillac" quality.

From that, you'll have to decide whether it's worth the extra cost.
