The Premium AUX-1 Harness
(updated 4/18/15)
I've shipped many hundreds of AUX-1 harnesses (and their variations) to C6 Vette owners over the past few years, and rarely do I hear of a problem. But once in a while, after many hours of use, one of the audio conductors in the cable can fail, and an audio channel might be lost. In an effort to continually improve my products and make them as "bulletproof" as possible, I like to answer requests for an even better product. I think this new Premium AUX-1 harness is the answer.
The standard audio cables I use in the AUX-1 harnesses have a 3.5mm stereo plug like this:
Inside the cable are three separate wires - an audio right, and audio left, and an audio common. They are not shielded, but I rarely ever hear complaints about noise. Even the longest AUX-1 cable is about 12' long, and they perform just fine.
The new Premium cables have the left and right audio conductors inside a common shield, which is standard practice in high quality audio products. For a short audio cable, most listeners can't tell the difference in sound quality (me included), but some owners want "the best". Also, a shielded cable makes construction of my harness more difficult because the shield must be brought out separately, then double heat shrink tubing must be installed before connector terminals are added:
The terminals are inserted in a Yazaki connector:
The Premium cables also have a higher quality 3.5mm stereo plug:
The outer jackets are more flexible and the overall quality is slightly better.
For the female AUX-1F harnesses, the female jack is also higher quality:
Here is a completed AUX-1F PREM harness:
As on all of my latest harnesses, I use only the best OEM quality Yazaki and Delphi terminals and connectors.
The new Premium harnesses are a PITA to build because of the extra cable shielding, and the cables cost me about five times as much as the standard cables, so the total cost is going to be $10 more than the standard harnesses.
Will they sound better? Probably not.
Will they last longer? Probably so.
Are they worth the extra cost? You'll need to decide that.
You'll be happy with either one.
